Tony Parker would like, and receives, a do-over on his terrible free throw (Video)
If you've ever wondered how to say "whoops" in French, the answer is apparently "oups" or "des whoops." I'm not sure which one of those I love more, so let's just use them both to describe Tony Parker's aborted attempt at a free throw during the third quarter of the San Antonio Spurs' Wednesday night matchup with the Chicago Bulls:
"Des whoops," indeed.
Weirdly, as Trey Kerby of The Starters noted, this isn't the first time we've seen Parker do this:
I'm not entirely sure what happened to Parker in these two instances. Maybe he had some excess moisture on his fingertips. Maybe he felt a sneeze coming on. Maybe he thought he saw a ghost, or, even worse, the specter of noted foul-shot-blocking referee Courtney Kirkland (despite the fact that he was not calling this particular game). Whatever the explanation, referee James Capers seemed to think it kosher on Wednesday to give Parker another crack at his technical freebie, which the 80 percent free-throw shooter knocked down to give the Spurs a one-point lead.
Parker made all three of his free throws en route to a team-high 20 points and six assists, but his efforts weren't enough to lift a short-handed San Antonio team playing without four huge rotation pieces, falling by a score of 96-86 to a Chicago Bulls team that featured seven players in double-figures, led by shooting guard Jimmy Butler (19 points on 7 for 11 shooting, four rebounds, three steals, two blocks) and expected All-Star reserve center Joakim Noah (10 points, 10 rebounds, eight assists, four blocks). The Bulls improved to 23-22, and 9-4 since trading away longtime star Luol Deng, while the Spurs have now dropped four of five, and hold just a two-game lead over the Houston Rockets in the Southwest Division.
(Also, it will never not be tough to hear Doug Collins reference the gold-medal game screwjob in Munich, even if he's doing it as a joke. Feeling for you here, Doug.)
