Tony Gwynn Jr. opens packs and looks for his dad's card on 'Old Baseball Cards'

Tony Gwynn would have been 59 years old on Thursday. The MLB icon, who died in 2014, remains one of the most beloved players in the game’s history and one of the greatest hitters we’ve ever seen.

On “Old Baseball Cards,” our baseball-card powered trip down memory lane, we’ve come across Gwynn cards a few times and heard his peers talk about how great he was. For this episode, though, we got another Gwynn — Tony Gwynn Jr. — to join us and see if we could find his dad.

We open a pack of 1989 Topps (the year Tony Sr. won the batting title) and 1994 Topps Stadium Club, the year Gwynn famously hit .394 before the strike. It’s obvious Tony Jr. grew up around baseball because he has plenty of stories and memories to share. Along the way, Gwynn Jr. talks about Bo Jackson, Gary Sheffield, Mike Harkey and lots more.

These days, Tony Jr. is a radio broadcaster for the San Diego Padres. He played in the big leagues from 2006 to 2014, then joined the Dodgers radio broadcast team before heading down to San Diego where the Gwynn name will always be royalty.
