Tommy Lasorda honored with one final sendoff at Dodger Stadium
Former Dodgers icon Tommy Lasorda got one last trip to Dodger Stadium on Tuesday afternoon.
Lasorda’s friends and family all gathered on the field at the stadium to honor the longtime manager, who died earlier this month at 93.
Lasorda served as the Dodgers’ manager from 1976-96, and led them to a pair of World Series titles and four National League championships. Lasorda, who pitched for the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1954, was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1997.
He worked as an adviser with the franchise since he retired, and even traveled to Texas to watch the team win the World Series in October.
Lasorda had a history of heart problems — he suffered a heart attack in 1996 just before he retired, and again in 2012 while at the MLB draft — and was hospitalized for nearly two months late last year. He went home from the hospital earlier this month, but suffered a “sudden cardiopulmonary arrest” and died just days later.
Though the sendoff was likely much smaller than normal, considering how COVID-19 is raging through Southern California and the stadium is actually being used as a coronavirus vaccination site, the sight of Lasorda’s casket on the mound is one that Dodgers fans likely won’t forget anytime soon.
