Lubbock County prosecutor Tom Brummett on Thursday is expected to announce his candidacy for judge of County Court at Law 2.

Brummett filed on Nov. 19 for a spot in the March 1 Republican Party primary elections, according to a Lubbock County GOP news release.

A Lubbock native, Brummett earned his bachelor's degree from Texas Tech and received his law degree from Indiana University School of Law in 2002.

Since then he has worked at the Lubbock County District Attorney's Office.

“After 19 years of serving the people of West Texas, I want to expand that role and meet the needs of our community in a different way,” Brummett said in a statement announcing his candidacy.

County Court at Law 2 is one of two courts that preside mainly over misdemeanor criminal cases in Lubbock County.

At present, Brummett is the only candidate to file for candidacy for judge of County Court at Law 2 in the Republican primary.

The filing deadline is 6 p.m. Monday.

Judge Drue Farmer, who currently presides over the court, is not running for re-election.
