01:28 PM

YELLOW CARD!

Ansell is given a 10-minute time out and Britain lose their man advantage.

01:26 PM

GOAL! India 3-1 Great Britain

What a counter-attack.

It's all Britain but India break and Hardik Singh goes clean through on goal. His first shot is saved by Ollie Payne, but he scores at the second attempt. It's all over for Britain, surely.

01:21 PM

YELLOW CARD!

Manpreet Singh dives in, catches Chris Griffiths and picks up a yellow, meaning he'll sit out the rest of the match.

Britain have just over six minutes to capitalise. From the ensuing penalty corner, Sreejesh stands tall to stop the shot once again.

01:17 PM

Another penalty corner to Britain

... and another chance goes begging.

Sreejesh makes another top save to keep India ahead. Britain are piling on the pressure but have under 10 minutes to find a leveller.

01:12 PM

Penalty corner to Britain

After Sreejesh kicks the ball away illegally.

He redeems himself with an excellent save, however, and India give Britain a scare with a lightning counter-attack.

01:10 PM

Into the final quarter

Can Britain haul themselves level here? Or will India stave off their fightback? The tension is unbearable.

01:07 PM

GOAL! India 2-1 Great Britain

A scramble on the goalline sees the ball hit Rupinder Pal Singh on the foot and Britain have a penalty corner.

India goalkeeper Parattu Raveendran Sreejesh makes a great save to deny them. They win three more penalty corners in quick succession and, at the third attempt, Sam Ward finally scores.

12:55 PM

Ansell returns

... which is good news for Britain, because they are under considerable pressure.

Gurjant Singh has a crack from a tight angle, forcing Ollie Payne into a reflex save.

12:53 PM

GREEN CARD!

Liam Ansell bears down on goal but is dispossessed by Manpreet Singh and brings him down, earning himself a green card.

Rupinder Pal Singh's suspension is over, meaning that India now have a man advantage.

12:50 PM

Second half begins

... and Rupinder Pal Singh is shown a green card almost immediately for a hit on Sam Ward.

Phil Roper has a shot at goal but it loops wide.

12:40 PM

Half time, India 2-0 Great Britain

Britain had the lion's share of the possession in the second quarter, but struggled to do much with it.

India have looked more dynamic in defence and more incisive in attack so far. Britain are still in it, just about, but need a much-improved performance in the second half.

12:34 PM

Dilpreet Singh returns

... with Britain unable to make their man advantage count.

India's running has been hugely impressive, with their superior stamina allowing them to close down space at speed and deny Britain openings in midfield and attack.

12:29 PM

GREEN CARD!

Dilpreet Singh is punished for a trip and Britain now have two minutes with an extra man.

12:26 PM

GOAL! India 2-0 Great Britain

Britain are punished for loose passing again, Liam Sanford giving the ball away before Gurjant Singh bursts past him, turns him with some fancy footwork and slams home.

India are well on top now. Britain need to tighten up at the back if they are to have any chance of turning this around.

12:20 PM

First quarter draws to a close

... and India have a one-goal advantage.

Britain have had a couple of opportunities but don't look quite as assured as their opponents.

12:16 PM

India lose referral

... which may come back to haunt them later on.

Britain regretted squandering their referral against Belgium on Friday when the ball crossed the line and umpire Paco Vazquez failed to spot it. India will have to hope that nothing similar happens here.

12:13 PM

GOAL! India 1-0 Great Britain

Britain give the ball away in a dangerous position, the ball is slipped through for Dilpreet Singh and he pings a shot between the legs of Ollie Payne.

India have an early lead. Britain can have no complaints really.

12:07 PM

Penalty corner to Britain

... after the ball hits Harmanpreet Singh on the foot.

Sam Ward lines up a shot, but can't find the target. Britain get another penalty corner, but the decision is overturned on appeal.

11:58 AM

Other quarter-final results

Australia and Germany are also through to the semis, having beaten the Netherlands and Argentina respectively.

Can Britain join them in the last four? Hockey doesn't get any tougher than this.

Whitlock over the moon

"It's been an incredible journey," Whitlock tells the BBC after collecting his gold medal. "It's a million times harder [to retain an Olympic title] and I knew that going through.

"The pressure was there and I could really feel that. This was probably the most pressured environment I've ever been in.

"This morning I really felt it and I've always said that chasing is ten times easier than retaining. I've learned that throughout my journey and I feel fortunate to have learned that and to have been in this position going into this competition.

"I was only getting older, but experience pays a lot in situations like this. I'm just incredibly happy and thankful for the journey we've been on to get here."

08:46 AM

Pan wins bronze

Despite digging the ball out of the sand and onto the putting surface deftly, Morikawa fails to make par and leaves Pan to putt for bronze.

He gets it done coolly and calmly, bringing what has been an exhilarating play-off to a close.

08:41 AM

Pan ends up in the rough

... missing the fairway off the tee, while Morikawa's tee shot is also far from perfect and skews right.

Pan does well to get his second shot near the putting surface. Morikawa slams one into the bunker, putting him in a very tricky position.

08:27 AM

Munoz out

... after missing his chip.

Pereira is left heartbroken after the ball circles the hole but is spat back out again. McIlroy also fails to make birdie, leaving Pan and Morikawa to battle it out for bronze.

08:22 AM

Morikawa with a fantastic second shot

... which very nearly drops straight into the cup and sets him up with a chance at a birdie.

Pan then matches him with a near-identical effort. Pereira and McIlroy do much the same, with Munoz in a difficult spot off to the left.

08:10 AM

Five pars at the 10th

... meaning it's still a five-way fight for bronze as we head to the third play-off hole.

08:09 AM

Rose congratulates Schauffele

... with the Rio 2016 gold medallist hailing his successor and caddy Austin Kaiser.

07:53 AM

McIlroy survives

... after making par.

The bronze medal play-off goes on, but with only McIlroy, Pan, Morikawa, Pereira and Munoz remaining.

07:51 AM

Casey is out

... having missed his putt to make bogey. Matsuyama does the same, meaning he's also out of the running.

07:45 AM

Pan, Morikawa, Pereira and Munoz make par

... meaning that if McIlroy, Casey or Matsuyama sink a birdie they will knock the others out.

07:29 AM

Bronze medal play-off begins

Can Casey add another medal to Team GB's collection? Will McIlroy triumph? Let's find out.

07:16 AM

Gold for Schauffele

... who does brilliantly to save par after that wild tee shot.

Sabbatini wins silver, while McIlroy, Casey, Pan, Matsuyama, Morikawa, Pereira and Munoz will compete for bronze.

07:12 AM

Agony for Matsuyama

... who squanders a birdie try which would have secured bronze.

There will now be a seven-way bronze medal play-off. Casey keeps himself in the mix, saving par.

07:03 AM

But wait a minute!

Schauffele's tee shot goes wrong, skewing way right of the final fairway.

Are we looking at a two-man play-off for gold? Has Sabbatini been given an opening here?

06:54 AM

McIlroy's birdie try falls short

... and he misses his opportunity to go third outright on -16.

Casey, meanwhile, joins the chasing pack at -15 after getting down in two. Meanwhile, Schauffele has pulled ahead and will take a one-shot lead to the final hole meaning that, if he pars it, he will win Olympic gold.

06:40 AM

Back to the golf

... where Japan's Hideki Matsuyama has missed a putt from less than three feet on No 15, dropping to -15 alongside C. T. Pan, Collin Morikawa, Mito Pereira, Sebastian Munoz and Rory McIlroy.

It's an absolute melee for bronze at the moment. With frontrunners Sabbatini and Schauffele still tied on -17, the tension is palpable.

06:20 AM

French boxer stages ringside protest

Team GB's Frazer Clarke is guaranteed at least a bronze medal in Tokyo after French opponent Mourad Aliev was disqualified for excessive use of his head in their men's super heavyweight quarter-final.

That saw Aliev stage a one-man protest, sitting down alone on the edge of the ring for more than half an hour. You can read more about the abrupt end to that bout here.

Casey slips back in men's golf medal hunt

Having been in the bronze medal position earlier on, Paul Casey has fallen back on the leaderboard and is now down in 12th alongside Canada's Corey Conners.

Rory Sabbatini and Xander Schauffele are vying for gold. Schauffele has just saved bogey on No 14 and the two are tied at -17 with four holes to play.

Swimming report: Scott wins four medals at Tokyo 2020

Duncan Scott became the first British athlete to win four medals at a single Olympics as Team GB celebrated their best swimming haul at a Games.

Luke Greenbank, Adam Peaty, James Guy and Scott took silver in the men's 4x100 metres medley relay final, finishing 0.73 seconds behind the United States, who claimed gold in a world record time of three minutes and 26.78 seconds.

Britain's eighth medal – with four golds, three silvers and a bronze – in the final swimming event in the Japanese capital bettered their previous best tally in the pool of seven gongs, set at the London Games 113 years ago.

Scott has won gold in the men's 4x200m freestyle relay and silver in the solo event as well as finishing runner-up in the 200m individual medley, and it was another second spot on the podium on Sunday.

Greenbank, the 200m backstroke bronze medallist, was seventh after the opening leg, but Peaty, eyeing his third gold of these Olympics, swam a remarkable breaststroke split of 56.53s to take them into the lead.

Guy, also chasing a hat-trick of gold medals this week, swam his butterfly leg in a creditable 50.27s but was overtaken by the vaunted Caeleb Dressel, with American compatriot Zach Apple completing the job.

Victory for the USA was a second win on Sunday for Dressel after prevailing in the 50m freestyle earlier, capping a sensational Games for the 24-year-old, who has collected five golds in Japan and now has seven overall.

The USA-Britain one-two matched the result from the Rio 2016 Games.

Scott said: "It's all my teammates, that's what that is. I'm fortunate to be part of some excellent relay teams, this being one of them. We're all pretty disappointed with this, but in 2015, when we started coming together, back-to-back Olympic silvers in this event, we'd have taken that all day.

"We're coming in here to really challenge the Americans just like we did last time at worlds. With our splits, we all swam well, slightly disappointed with mine but that's how it is. It's been a tough week, but we've got to be happy with that."

Peaty added: "Unfortunately we didn't do enough to take that gold, but with the success British Swimming have had and we have had, sometimes you need a little bit of pain.

"This is painful, and I know people at home will say we got Olympic silver, but that's the standard we are at now. We're not looking at bronze or silver, we're looking at how to get gold.

"That's just my mindset, and I know these guys are disappointed as well, that's just the honest opinion of our performance and what we thought we could do. But that's a world record for them, you can't ask for more, and it's my fifth medal at two Olympics."
