If you’re on #foodtok, odds are you’ve run into the latest viral recipe to come from its pool of creators in the past couple of weeks: the Green Goddess salad. Originally shared by Melissa Ben-Ishay—the mind behind Baked by Melissa (whose cupcakes we loved, by the way)—the cabbage-based salad has exploded since she first shared the recipe, with thousands of TikTokers recreating it. Even Grammy-winner and vegan icon Lizzo caved earlier this week, joining in on the trend after saying she’d been “been haunted by this salad.” (Spoiler alert—she liked it.)

So here’s what everyone’s going crazy about: The salad (or chunky dip, depending on how you eat it) is made with thinly chopped cabbage, cucumbers and green onions as the base, with a “green goddess dressing” made of garlic, shallot, lemon juice, chives, olive oil, rice vinegar, walnuts, cashews, basil, spinach and nutritional yeast. Once it’s assembled, you can dive right in with a fork, or enjoy it as a dip with some sturdy tortilla chips (as Ben-Ishay does in her video).

The recipe itself is pretty straightforward, with standard ingredients you might already have on hand. But the trick is getting those veggies sliced thin enough—and having the right tools on hand to bring it all together. Here are the gadgets and appliances (all recommended by our experts!) that you’ll need to bring this viral video to life.

1. A chef’s knife

The right chef's knife will make prepping the salad a breeze.
The right chef's knife will make prepping the salad a breeze.

The first struggle you might have in this recipe is attempting to prepare it with a table knife (I’ve made this mistake myself; it’s not pretty). In order to get ultra-thin slices of the cabbage, cucumbers, and green onions for your base—the key to a successful, TikTok worthy result—you’ll need a sharp and high quality chef’s knife. After testing over a dozen of the best, we found the Zwilling Pro 8-inch to be the best, but Victorinox Fibrox Pro Chef's Knife is another great choice if you’re looking to save money.

2. A cutting board

The Totally Bamboo Kauai Cutting Board is the best we tested.

This might sound obvious, but a good cutting board is a staple in almost any given recipe, and the green goddess salad is no exception. You want to have one that’s strong enough to stay flat when chopping, but light enough to keep up with regular cleaning. We love this Totally Bamboo Kauai Cutting Board the best; it passed all of our tests with flying colors, plus it’s made from a sustainable, renewable resource.

3. A stainless steel bench scraper

Bench scrapers are great for a variety of cooking and baking tasks.

While not a necessity in this prepping process, a bench scraper is a helpful tool to keep in your cabinets, especially for transferring large piles of chopped veggies from a cutting board to a bowl or pan. This bench scraper from OXO is affordable, and it has a comfortable non-slip handle with a stainless steel blade that makes it easy to use.

4. A big bowl

Well, duh. You’ll need something to put this masterpiece in when it’s ready to eat. But since the recipe calls for a full head of cabbage (or iceberg lettuce), you’ll want to make sure you have something big enough to fit the whole salad, with plenty of room for mixing in the dressing without making a mess. Enter: these Cuisinart Stainless Steel Mixing Bowls, which we crowned as the best due to their long-lasting material, lightweight profile and comfortable rim. And who knows? Maybe you’ll get into baking after this, in which case these will definitely come in handy.

5. A citrus juicer

Juicing a lemon is easier with the right tool.
Juicing a lemon is easier with the right tool.

This recipe calls for lemon juice in the dressing (or you can substitute lime, like Lizzo did), which is much easier to add when you’re not worried about pits and pulp getting into your dish. A good handheld juicer does all the work for you, making sure you get every last drop of juice without the less desired bits. Our favorite tool is the Chef'n FreshForce Citrus Juicer, which we found to be the fastest working one that we tested, without sacrificing quality or making a mess.

6. A food processor (or a good blender)

A food processor helps make a creamy dressing.

Last but certainly not least: The pièce de résistance. The obvious star of this recipe is the dressing, and without the right appliance to blend it all together, you’re stuck. Melissa uses a blender in her video (our suggestion for best value is the Instant Pot Ace Nova Cooking Blender), but we typically recommend using food processors when chopping ingredients like the ones featured in this recipe. If you’re in the market for one, our favorite is the Cuisinart “Custom 14” model, which aced almost all of our tests and was easy to clean. But if you’re tight on cash (or counter space), we also love the Philips Multi-Chopper, a mini food processor that works well with chopping veggies and whipping up quick sauces and dressings. Alternatively, if all you have on hand is a hand blender—don’t worry, that should do the trick here too.
