What is TikTok Now? Is it similar to BeReal?

TikTok launched a new feature that feels inspired by the trendy photo-sharing app BeReal.

‘Tenniscore’ is taking over the internet — here’s how to nail the look

Gen Z made BeReal popular in 2022, a few years after its initial release in 2019. It has been downloaded over 7 million times worldwide but is most popular in the U.S. and France. What sets BeReal apart from other social media platforms is that it aims to foster authenticity rather than curated personal branding. TikTok’s latest feature, “TikTok Now,” appears to boast the same concept as the anti-social media app.

What is BeReal?

The BeReal app is unlike other social media platforms. It doesn’t rely on influencer culture nor intends to make anyone famous. The app sends every user a simultaneous notification at a random time of day. This prompts them to record what they’re doing at the moment, no matter how interesting or ordinary, using their front and back cameras.

What is TikTok Now?

TikTok stated in a press release that TikTok Now “invites you and your friends to capture what you’re doing in the moment using your device’s front and back camera. You’ll receive a daily prompt to capture a 10-second video or a static photo to easily share what you’re up to.”

Who can use TikTok Now?

The TikTok Now experience is different depending on your age and location. Users in the U.S. will be able to access the feature in-app, while those abroad may need to download a separate TikTok Now app.

For those 18 and under, TikTok Now will be more regulated as a safety measure. TikTok Now posts for minors will not be posted on the Explore feed.

Teens between “13 and 15 will have commenting options limited to Friends only to help protect against unwanted interactions.” Accounts on TikTok Now and TikTok for those under 16 will be set automatically to private.

For those 18 and over, TikTok Now posts can be shared amongst mutual friends or publicly with the TikTok Now community.
