Auburn basketball’s win streak has reached ten games, and the team is playing at an incredible level.
The No. 11 Tigers traveled to Nashville on Wednesday and escaped with an 80-65 win over Vanderbilt to improve its SEC record to 4-0. Vanderbilt outscored Auburn in the second half, 41-39. However, Auburn connected on 46% of its shots throughout the game and dominated free throw shooting to leave Memorial Gymnasium with a 15-point win.
Four players reached double figures in the contest, but the most impressive performance of the game was that of graduate student Jaylin Williams. Williams, who led the team in points with 21, was flawless in Wednesday’s win. He reached 21 points by connecting on all seven of his shots from the field, which included a 2-for-2 mark beyond the three-point line, and made all five of his free throw attempts.
Who else made an impact in Auburn’s victory over Vanderbilt? Here’s a look at which players Auburn Wire writers, as well as Auburn fans, voted for as their “Tigers of the Game.”
Taylor Jones: Dylan Cardwell
Dylan Cardwell was Auburn’s most productive bench piece on Wednesday. He scored a season-high 12 points in the win over Vanderbilt and led the team in blocks with two. He also recorded six rebounds and was 4-for-4 at the free-throw line.
JD McCarthy: Jaylin Williams
Jaylin Williams continued his spectacular “last ride” on Wednesday by scoring 21 points and securing eight rebounds. It marks the fifth time Williams has reached 20 points this season and the 10th time he has reached double-figures this season. His eight rebounds were the second-highest total of the season behind the 10 boards he grabbed during the Legends Classic win over St. Bonaventure on Nov. 17.
Brian Hauch: Johni Broome
Johni Broome ended the game with the team’s second-highest point total, 15. However, the trend of high-end second-half production was in effect again for Broome. He scored four points in the first half of Auburn’s win and scored the remaining team-leading 11 points in the second half. Broome also split his 12 rebound total by securing six in each half. The double-double was his seventh of the season, and his first since Auburn’s win over Penn on Jan. 2.
Fan vote: Jaylin Williams
Auburn fans have spoken, and they have elected Jaylin Williams as Tiger of the Game for his efforts in Auburn’s win over Vanderbilt. Williams earned 90% of the vote, beating out the likes of Johni Broome, Dylan Cardwell, and Aden Holloway for the honor.
