Tiger Woods confirms FedExCup Playoffs with Northern Trust, BMW Championship commitments
Tiger Woods announced Wednesday he will compete in the FedExCup playoff events this month, the second time this season he’ll play on consecutive weeks.
Woods said on Twitter he’ll play in The Northern Trust on Aug. 8 and the BMW Championship the following week.

Woods usually waits until later in the week to announce his commitment to tournaments as he plays a light schedule while aiming to win majors. He missed the cut at the Open Championship in mid-July and said he would take time off before the playoffs. The playoffs are three events this season instead of four.
Last year, Woods completed his triumphant return to golf greatness with a remarkable comeback victory at the Tour Championship in Atlanta. It was his first tournament victory since 2013 and his 80th overall on the PGA Tour. He added his 15th major in April at the Masters and has taken time off between events to rest his back.
Woods is currently at 27th in the standings. Brooks Koepka and Rory McIlroy are first and second, respectively, with nearly double the events played. This year there will be only an overall cup title winner and no individual Tour Championship winner.
The Northern Trust will be played at Liberty National in New Jersey beginning Aug. 8. Woods finished tied for second both times he played at the course (2009 and 2013 Barclays). The first FedEx Cup playoff spot was held at Bryson DeChambeau last year, where he finished tied for 40th.
The Northern Trust trims the field from the top 125 players from the regular season to 70.
The BMW Championships, held Aug. 13, are at Medinah Country Club in Illinois where Woods finished tied for sixth last season.
The initial two playoff events will award 2,000 points to the victor, four times as many as a regular-season win, and for the first tie this year the Tour Championship will be a strokes-based system. Cup points leaders will begin with a certain number of strokes taken off their round. The top 30 players in the standings through the two rounds will make it to the final event at East Lake in Atlanta.
Justin Rose won the FedEx Cup title in 2018 with a birdie on the final hole that overtook Woods’ season-long points total.
