In a new regular column on Rotoworld, we reflect on the tournaments just gone and also take an early peek at the action ahead on the PGA and European Tours. Mo Yoshimoto will take a much deeper delve into what took place at Austin Country Club in The Takeaway.
1st. -13 Tiger Woods (Odds: 14/1, DraftKings pricing: $10,500)
T2. -12 Dustin Johnson (Odds: 9/1, DraftKings pricing: $11,300)
T2. -12 Xander Schauffele (Odds: 35/1, DraftKings pricing: $8,500)
T2. -12 Brooks Koepka (Odds: 22/1, DraftKings pricing: $9,500)
T5. -11 Jason Day (Odds: 28/1, DraftKings pricing: $9,100)
T5. -11 Webb Simpson (Odds: 80/1, DraftKings pricing: $7,400)
T5. -11 Tony Finau (Odds: 50/1, DraftKings pricing: $8,200)
T5. -11 Francesco Molinari (Odds: 25/1, DraftKings pricing: $8,600)
Notes: For so long during the weekend it looked as if Molinari would hold off the chasing pack, but his short game was being tested with ever greater frequency in round four and then he found water at 12, immediately opening up the tournament for the field. Patrick Cantlay briefly led, as did Schauffele, but Woods made birdies at 13, 15 and 16 to go clear and maintained his composure to seal the deal on a leaderboard that had elite quality running right through it.
Fate of the Favorites
T21 -5 Rory McIlroy (Odds: 7/1, DraftKings pricing: $11,600)
T2 -12 Dustin Johnson (Odds: 9/1, DraftKings pricing: $11,300)
MC Justin Rose (Odds: 14/1, DraftKings pricing: $10,800)
1st -14 Tiger Woods (Odds: 14/1, DraftKings pricing: $10,500)
T12 -8 Justin Thomas (Odds: 14/1, DraftKings pricing: $10,200)
T9 -10 Jon Rahm (Odds: 18/1, DraftKings pricing: $10,000)
T9 -10 Rickie Fowler (Odds: 22/1, DraftKings pricing: $9,700)
Notes: A poor week for the Brit favorites, Woods completed the golfing comeback for the ages and his fellow Americans also featured, although every one of them may consider they didn’t time their charge quite right, a story Rahm, too, will associate with.
Coming up this week …
The RBC Heritage
Location: Harbour Town Golf Links. 7,100 yards, par 71.
Notes: The PGA Tour’s traditional Masters after-party on the South Carolina coast. A popular stop for everyone, but a very different challenge. The fairways might be tree-lined, but they are much tighter than at Augusta, the greens are the smallest on Tour, they are relatively flat, and they’re also Bermuda grass.
Who’s playing? Abraham Ancer, Aaron Baddeley, Daniel Berger, Patrick Cantlay, Stewart Cink, Corey Conners, Bryson DeChambeau, Luke Donald, Jason Dufner, Ernie Els, Matthew Fitzpatrick, Tommy Fleetwood, Jim Furyk, Lucas Glover, Branden Grace, Brian Harman, Billy Horschel, Sungjae Im, Dustin Johnson, Zach Johnson, Kevin Kisner, Patton Kizzire, Matt Kuchar, Marc Leishman, Graeme McDowell, Francesco Molinari, Eddie Pepperell, Ian Poulter, Xander Schauffele, Webb Simpson, Jordan Spieth, Brandt Snedeker,
Last 5 Winners
2018 (-12, 272) Satoshi Kodaira – 1st PGA TOUR win
2017 (-13, 271) Wesley Bryan – 1st PGA TOUR win
2016 (-9, 275) Branden Grace – 1st PGA TOUR win
2015 (-18, 266) Jim Furyk – 17th PGA TOUR win
2014 (-11, 273) Matt Kuchar – 7th PGA TOUR win
Notes: Three maiden winners in a row after a pair of veterans. Traditionally the track favors canny tee-to-green merchants who can deal with blustery wind.
Still no action. One more week of Easter break before play resumes at the Trophee Hassan II in Morocco.
