Tift tennis sets state tournament matches

Apr. 11—TIFTON — Tift County now knows time, date and most importantly, opponents for the first round of the state tournament.

The Blue Devils and Lady Devils will both play Wednesday, April 17 at 1 p.m. at the TCHS courts. Dunwoody and North Atlanta are the opponents.

No. 1 in Region 1-6A, the Devils are playing Dunwoody, Region 4-6A's No. 4 team. North Atlanta, No. 3 in Region 4, are to play the No. 2 Lady Devils.

Should they win, the Blue Devils would have another home game, against either Morrow or Lakeside (Evans). Round for the Lady Devils would be Lovejoy or Lakeside (Evans).

Tuesday, Tift tennis wrapped the regular season by splitting matches at West Laurens.

The boys won, 5-0, with West Laurens' Lady Raiders winning, 4-1.

Elijah Hellman won in straight sets at No. 3 singles, 6-0, 6-0. Joshua Hellman won at No. 2, 6-1, 6-2, and No. 2 doubles — Seth Denham and Ross Peters — won their match, 6-1, 6-0.

The other wins for the Devils required an extra session. Tyson Lasseter and Matthew Layfield saw their sets go 6-6 (7-4), 4-6, 10-5. Maitrey Patel won his first set 6-3, dropped the second 2-6, then came back 10-6.

Abby Lupo had the lone win for the Lady Devils at No. 3 singles, 6-1, 6-2.

Madison Garner and Kenyaria Morrow almost extended their match, but fell in a 4-7 tiebreaker in the second set. Others on the courts were the doubles team of Perrin Turner and Kate Carpenter and Anna Lupo and Riley Griffin in singles.
