The Islanders and Devils were all set to go head to head in preseason action at the Prudential Center on Thursday night.

And then the lights went out.

About 15 minutes before the puck was set to drop, the video board above the ice and most of the lighting around the stadium bowl went out. The game was in a delay for about an hour before it was officially cancelled, with an announcement that it would not be made up.

The Devils released the following statement:

Because of a power outage that occurred prior to tonight’s game vs. the New York Islanders, lighting in the northeast bank of the arena was unable to be restored.

In consultation with the Islanders and the NHL, it was determined that the playing conditions were unsuitable for players on both teams.

Therefore, tonight’s pre-season contest has been cancelled and will not be re-scheduled.

The Islanders have one more preseason game on their schedule, as they’ll face the Rangers in Bridgeport, Conn. on Saturday at 7 p.m.

The Devils preseason slate is now finished, and they’ll have their season opener against the Chicago Blackhawks next Friday in Newark (assuming they can get the lights back on by then, of course).
