Three Bulldogs earn All-District Honors

Feb. 27—NEW WAVERLY — After a season full of transitions and a brand new roster, New Waverly boys' basketball picked up a handful of recognition from the opposing head coaches.

The Bulldogs were coming off a trip to the region finals in 2023, but graduated all but one of the playoff roster and started with a new coach. While things were bumpy, the 'Dogs settled and made some noise in district play.

With new coach Wayne Ware, New Waverly opened its season on a learning curve.

Despite the down year, the 'Dogs picked up four awards from three people on the season.

Sophomore point guard Rondell Lewis was a key leader for the team on the court this season and was awarded first-team All-District 23, 3A.

Junior guard Zan Sykes was New Waverly's long returner from its playoff run in 2023. With the most experience, the junior was key early on in the season. For his efforts, he was tabbed to the All-District 23, 3A second team.

A newcomer to the basketball team was senior Houston Forester. While Forester was around the team the last few years, this was the first time he hit the hardwood. In his first year, the coaches recognized him with an all-district honorable mention.

Forester was also rewarded for his efforts in the classroom as he was named to the All-District Academic team.

New Waverly finished its season with an 11-22 record but will bring back all but two members of its squad next year.
