Thorns defender Becky Sauerbrunn named to NWSL Team of the Month originally appeared on NBC Sports Northwest
The Portland Thorns spent much of the month of June not allowing any goals. In fact, only two goals were conceded.
Led by Becky Sauerbrunn, the Thorns backline helped set a franchise record for the longest consecutive minutes shutout streak at 371 minutes, which spanned from May 26 through June 26. Quite impressive.
Even more impressive was Sauerbrunn's play on the pitch.
On Thursday, the National Women's Soccer League named Sauerbrunn to the June Team of the Month. The honor marks the 9th time in her illustrious career being named to the team.
Sauerbrunn was dominate again for the Thorns in June, completing 85 percent of her passes out of the back half and winning just over 80% of aerial duels.
On the season, Sauerbrunn has played and started all seven games for the Thorns, logging 600 minutes, 24 clearances, 5 blocks and 9 interceptions.
Last month, Sauerbrunn was named to the USWNT Tokyo Olympics roster alongside teammates Adrianna Franch, Crystal Dunn and Lindsey Horan. The same day she was also named captain. The 2020 Olympics will mark her third appearance in the summer games.
The NWSL Team of the Month is selected each month of the regular season by the NWSL Media Association, a collection of writers that cover the league on a consistent basis.
