Third-quarter surge lifts Aurora past Edgewood in D-II district tournament game

Feb. 28—Staff Report

PENINSULA — A strong third quarter lifted Aurora past Edgewood 39-29 in a Division II girls basketball game at Woodridge High School.

The game was close throughout, but Aurora surged ahead with a 20-6 advantage that aided the win.

"I thought we played three strong quarters and had one bad quarter and that was the difference," Warriors coach Randy Vencill said. "We turned it over in the third and that led to easy buckets for them."

Katie McCollister led the Warriors with 11 points, while McKenna Vencill added nine.

"I'm very proud of everyone and how far we made it," McCollister said. "I think we surprised a lot of people and teams with how well we were able to work together this year and that led to a ton of success."

Despite the loss, McCollister will take away memories from the season.

"I'm very sad to see it come to an end, but I am so happy with how the season went," she said.

Edgewood finished the season 20-2. They won both a Chagrin Valley Conference Lake Division title and a sectional championship.

"I'm just so proud of these young ladies and our coaching staff," Vencill said. "They do things the right way and represent the Edgewood community with class."
