A married Tory MP couple were divided over the way they were voting in a ballot over Theresa May's leadership.

Following a day of political turmoil, Mrs May’s position as Prime Minister hung in the balance as she faced a confidence vote on Wednesday evening.

The PM has indicated she is willing to step down as leader before the next general election if she wins the vote and can finish the Brexit job.

Tory MPs Jack Lopresti MP and Andrea Jenkyns MP, who married in December 2017, were divided over how they were going to vote.

When asked by reporter Joey D’Urso how they were prepared to vote, Mr Lopresti answered defiantly: “I’ll be supporting the Prime Minister, of course.”

While Ms Jenkyns, the MP for Morley and Outwood, replied: “I’ve put it on Twitter, I’m going to vote the Prime Minister out”.

Ms Jenkyns has long been a critic of Mrs May, having sent in her letter of no confidence a few weeks ago and previously tweeted she was “dismayed and disgusted” at the PM’s Brexit plan.

Mr Lopresti, MP for Filton and Bradley Stoke, has previously publicly supported Mrs May, saying he “admired her sense of duty and determination to achieve a deal that’s in our country’s best interests.”

Voting by all 315 Tory MPs who have the whip was beginning at 6pm this evening and ending at 8pm. The announcement of the result — and the PM’s fate — was due at around 9pm.
