Texas A&M-Commerce wins rematch over Demons; advances to quarterfinals

Mar. 11—LAKE CHARLES, Louisiana — Texas A&M University-Commerce won a rematch over Northwestern State 69-64 on Saturday to advance to the quarterfinals of the Southland Conference basketball tournament.

The Lions, who needed three overtimes to beat the Demons 83-80 on Wednesday in Commerce, took care of Northwestern State in regulation play this time.

The 13-19 Lions advanced to the Southland quarterfinals to take on 18-13 Nicholls State of Louisiana. The game is scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m. on Monday at the Legacy Center in Lake Charles.

Northwestern State finished the season at 9-23. The Demons went 1-2 against A&M-Commerce this season, including a 70-57 win over the Lions at Natchitoches On Feb. 3.

A&M-Commerce outscored the Demons 43-31 in the second half after trailing 33-26 at halftime. The Lions shot 60.9% from the field in the second half after going only 34.6% in the first half.

Kalen Williams led the Lions with 19 points, followed by Kwo Agwa (16), Tommie Lewis (15), Alonzo Dodd (8), K.C. Ugwuakazi (6) and Khaliq Abdul-Mateen (5).

Justin Wilson led the Demons and all scorers with 20 points, followed by Chase Forte (17) and Cliff Davis (14).

A&M-Commerce has gone 0-2 against Nicholls this season, losing 85-70 at Nicholls on Feb. 24 and falling 87-84 in two overtimes on Jan. 27 in Commerce.

Diante Smith led the Colonels in the 87-84 win with 29 points, hitting a couple of key 3-pointers. Byron Ireland also tossed in 21 points.

Lewis, who was 4-of-10 from 3-point range, led the Lions in that game with 26 points. Williams tossed in 16 and Zondrick Garrett added 15.

Smith led Nicholls in the 85-70 win with 19 points, Rob Brown III tossed in 17 and Jamal West Jr. added 14.

Williams had a big game for the Lions with 31 points. He was 12-of-20 from the field.
