Texas' Lil'Jordan Humphrey pulls a Michael Crabtree with eerily similar game-winning TD catch 10 years later
Ten years ago, Texas Tech upset No. 1 Texas on a pass from Graham Harrell to Michael Crabtree in the final seconds.
On Saturday night, Texas got a bit of revenge.
The Longhorns led Texas Tech 34-17 in the fourth quarter, but allowed the Red Raiders to tie the score 34-34 with 1:45 to play. From there, Texas quarterback Sam Ehlinger calmly led the offense down the field and tossed the winning 29-yard touchdown pass to Lil’Jordan Humphrey with 21 seconds to go.

Humphrey’s clutch catch looked eerily similar to Crabtree’s grab from 2008.
The Harrell-to-Crabtree connection is one of the most famous plays in Texas Tech history. The stakes of that game, played Nov. 1, 2008, were much higher than Saturday night’s UT-TTU game. Both teams were 8-0 entering the game, but Texas was ranked No. 1 while the Red Raiders were No. 7.
On that night in Lubbock, Texas Tech trailed the Longhorns 33-32 with eight seconds remaining when Harrell looked the way of Crabtree, one of the best receivers in the country. Harrell delivered a perfect back-shoulder throw. Crabtree caught the ball at the 6-yard line, evaded two Texas defenders and waltzed into the end zone for a 28-yard score with just one second left on the clock, giving TTU a dramatic 39-33 victory.
Humphrey’s play looks pretty similar, doesn’t it?
Here’s Humphrey:
And here’s Crabtree:
Both plays happened at the same part of the field at the same stadium. Humphrey’s was 29 yards, Crabtree’s was 28. Oh, and it was the same play call: four verts.
Texas just literally scored on the Michael Crabtree play versus Texas. Same play (four verticals), back shoulder throw, same part of the field

Pretty cool, huh? Well, it’s cool for Texas fans this year.
