Texans coach David Culley sheds light on CB Bradley Roby trade to the Saints
HOUSTON — The Houston Texans traded cornerback Bradley Roby to the New Orleans Saints Wednesday morning.
The Texans’ compensation for Roby has not been determined. But Houston saved closed to $19 million in cap space over the next two seasons.
According to coach David Culley, Roby’s trade to the Saints has not been made official.
“Bradley was not going to play this game anyways, so the guys we are playing with right now are the guys we are going with,” Culley said Wednesday morning. “We have been going with those guys since training camp, and we feel comfortable with them.”
“We brought in some other guys, so hopefully that will give us some depth at that position also.”
After beginning his career with the Denver Broncos in 2014, Roby joined the Texans on a one-year deal in 2019. He played a significant role in the Broncos’ Super Bowl title in 2015.
Roby’s on-field contributions for the Texans awarded him a three-year contract in 2020 worth $36 million. In two seasons with the Texans, Roby recorded 15 pass deflections and three interceptions, while allowing 62.3 percent of passes thrown into his coverage to be completed.
A month before his departure, Roby spoke on the positive culture the Texans created during training camp, which had him excited for a fresh start in 2021.
“The guys that we have brought back are all positive, good guys, and we can start from there,” Roby said following training camp practice in August. “We can start a base and a culture from there because the base and the culture comes from the players. It’s set by the coach, but the players have to carry it out and enforce it. I think the guys that have carried over and the new guys, we’re going to buy in, and I think you’ve got to start from somewhere, and I think it’s a good start.”
Roby will make his debut for the Saints during their Week 2 match against the Carolina Panthers. He will miss the season opener due to serving the final game of his six-game suspension after violating the NFL’s performance-enhancing drug policy in November 2020.
