Texans C Justin Britt says QB Davis Mills is ‘more comfortable’
Rookie quarterback Davis Mills hasn’t been seen since Week 8.
The Houston Texans dropped a 38-22 encounter with the Los Angeles Rams at NRG Stadium. Mills went 29-of-38 for 310 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception largely in garbage time when the game was well in hand for the Rams, who led 38-0 to start the fourth quarter.
The Texans went with Tyrod Taylor from Weeks 9-13 as he gave Houston the best chance to win.
Midway through the third quarter of Houston’s 31-0 loss to the Indianapolis Colts Sunday afternoon at NRG Stadium. the Texans had to return to Mills as Taylor was getting his wrist checked out.
The third-round rookie entered the game with 3:17 to go in the third quarter and finished the game, going 6-of-14 for 49 yards and taking two sacks.
Even though Mills didn’t even get 50 yards passing, nor did he lead Houston on a drive that ended in points, center Justin Britt says that he saw a difference in the rookie against the Colts.
“You could tell it in his eyes, his belief in himself and the offense, his job, what he’s got to do,” said Britt. “He’s more comfortable, more poised. It speaks volumes to who he is, how he prepares. And I thought he came in and, like I said, commanded the offense and did all he could to try to get us in the end zone.”
Mills’ best drive ended at the Colts’ 40-yard line on a fourth-and-6 with 14:19 to go in the game. A pass to rookie receiver Nico Collins fell incomplete.
Going from Taylor to Mills wasn’t a difficult task for Britt as he says he has had a substantial amount of work with both signal callers.
“I’ve had plenty of work with Davis,” Britt said. “I’ve had plenty of work with Tyrod. Obviously, we don’t want Tyrod to go down, and I’m not going to speculate or talk about injuries, but when Davis stepped in, there was no waver. The confidence is up there. We know that he can play. We know that he can command the offense, and he did just that.”
Coach David Culley said the club will evaluate what to do at quarterback going forward.
