Kristina Mladenovic recovered from a set and a break down to halt Maria Sharapova's comeback on the WTA Tour in the Stuttgart Open semi-finals. Mladenovic remained unbowed, however, and fought back admirably to level before both women appeared beset by nerves towards the end of the decider. The Frenchwoman was broken when serving for the match at 5-3, but hit back immediately to end Sharapova's return and leave the Russian relying on another wildcard if she is to compete at the French Open next month.
An inspired Dominic Thiem progressed to the final of the Barcelona Open with a thrilling three-set victory over an out-of-sorts Andy Murray. World number one Murray, who had a 2-0 head-to-head record over Thiem prior to the encounter, had to battle to victory over Albert Ramos-Vinolas on Friday, but 24 hours later succumbed to a 6-2 3-6 6-4 defeat. The Scot appeared to have turned the tide after levelling the match and going up an early break in the decider, but Thiem was rewarded for his aggressive and accurate play, and he can now look forward to a final with nine-time champion Rafael Nadal or Horacio Zeballos.
Ilie Nastase is probably the most hated man in tennis at the moment after his racist comments about Serena Williams' unborn baby and his abuse of the British Fed Cup team members Johanna Konta and Anne Keothavong. Prior to his on-court tirade, the 1973 French Open winner was heard questioning the colour of Williams' baby during the pre-match press conference: "Let's see what colour it has. Chocolate with milk?" Nastase said.
