It is 40 years since Bjorn Borg and John McEnroe played out the most famous, memorable tie-break in tennis history.

McEnroe won it 18-16, to level the Wimbledon men’s singles final at two sets all, but Borg went on to win the match.

In the latest edition of Wimbledon Re-Lived from The Tennis Podcast, Borg describes the 34th point of that tie-break as “the worst minute of my tennis life”.

“I was sitting there thinking that I’ve had seven match points and now I’m sitting here and I have to play one set more - I can’t believe it. So that was the worst minute of my tennis life. One hour later was the best,” he said.

The Tennis Podcast team of Catherine Whitaker, David Law and Matt Roberts, chart Borg and McEnroe’s respective careers to that point, why their rivalry was so intoxicating, how McEnroe never lost his temper against Borg, and how bereft he felt when the Swede retired a year later.

We also hear from American broadcaster Mary Carillo, who shared a flight back from London with McEnroe and his father the next day, recounting an extraordinary story from the skies over the Atlantic.

The third edition of Wimbledon Re-Lived will cover the 1985 men’s title win for a 17-year-old Boris Becker.
