Will Tennessee baseball host super regional? What to know about the NCAA process
CLEMSON, S.C. − Tennessee baseball did its part to gain a super regional bid, winning the Clemson Regional in three games.
Now, the Vols have to wait until 10 a.m. ET Tuesday to learn if they will host a super regional at Lindsey Nelson Stadium. UT won the regional with a 9-2 victory against Charlotte on Sunday.
Here is what to know about Tennessee's pursuit of a hosting opportunity:
Why Tennessee is in position to host
Two things needed to happen for Tennessee to have a shot at hosting: It had to win the Clemson Regional and Auburn had to lose in the Auburn Regional. The Vols rolled to the regional title with three wins. Auburn was bounced in two games, losing to No. 4-seeded Penn and No. 2-seeded Southern Miss.
DRAMA: From Ethan Payne to Chase Burns, Tennessee baseball's win against Clemson had many heroes
That gives the Vols an opportunity to host with Auburn, the No. 13 national seed, out of the postseason.
How the NCAA chooses super regional hosts
Tennessee submitted a bid to host in the NCAA Tournament prior to the postseason beginning. It was not picked as a regional host. The bid also applies to a super regional.
The NCAA will choose between Tennessee and the winner of the Auburn Regional. Penn is 2-0 in the bracket as the No. 4 seed and only needs to beat Southern Miss on Sunday night or Monday. Southern Miss also submitted a bid to host. It is unlikely Penn did.
The committee will weight the "merits of the bids," NCAA media representative Jeff Williams said in a statement prior to the regional. The No. 2 seeds and below are not seeded in order.
Tennessee's case as a host is a strong one
Tennessee has hosted a regional and a super regional in Knoxville in each of the past two seasons. The Vols won a regional in both seasons. They won a super regional in 2021 to reach the College World Series, but fell a win shy of back-to-back trips to Omaha by losing to Notre Dame in 2022.
UT had such demand for tickets in 2021 that it added temporary seating down the left-field line, which led to installing upgraded temporary seating down the left-field line prior to the 2022 season. UT added a second deck to the left-field porches prior to the 2022 season and added a third deck before the 2023 season.
