Team USA dominates Latvia to secure spot in World Junior Championship semifinal

Jan. 2—GOTHENBURG, Sweden — The Americans are six periods away from winning gold.

Team USA beat Latvia 5-2 on Tuesday morning in the first round of the elimination portion of the 2024 IIHF World Junior Championship in Gothenburg, Sweden. Bemidji State men's hockey freshman defenseman Eric Pohlkamp played almost four minutes as the Americans' seventh defenseman.

Pohlkamp logged two shots on goal and took a penalty. He has two goals and one assist in five games for Team USA.

The Americans will play against Finland on NHL Network at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 4.

Bemidji State freshman forward Kasper Magnussen has one more game left in his WJC run. Norway finished Group B in last place and will play in the relegation game against Germany at 4 a.m. on Thursday.

Magnussen has one assist in four games. He holds a minus-6 on-ice rating with 31 penalty minutes.

The two last-placed teams play one relegation game. The winner of the game plays again at the 2025 IIHF World Junior Championship, while the loser is relegated to the 2025 IIHF Ice Hockey U20 World Championship Division I Group A.
