TCT sports round-up: Ballard baseball team earns first trip to state since 1989

The Ballard baseball team is headed to state in Class 3A.

The Bombers upset No. 7 Knoxville in the Class 3A Substate 6 championship game July 12 at Knoxville. They led from start to finish in a convincing 9-2 victory to punch their tickets to state for the first time since 1989.

Ballard raced out to a 4-0 lead. Knoxville pulled within 4-2 in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Ballard came right back with five runs in the top of the sixth and Knoxville could not respond, allowing the Bombers to earn a trip to Iowa City with a 21-10 record.

Jaren Njos doubled once and Eli Rouse, Miles Mudd, Jaden Peasley, Jacob Luster and Owen Greco each singled once to account for Ballard's six hits on offense. Mudd scored three times and drove in two runs, Peasley scored twice, Luster drove in two runs and Greco scored once.

Nolan Schonhorst drove in three runs despite not recording a hit. He walked twice during the game.

Cooper Olson scored twice and Chance Lande once for the Bombers. Ballard also stole five bases as a team, with Peasley swiping two and Mudd, Schonhorst and Greco one apiece.

Rouse was the winning pitcher. He overcame six walks by giving up just three hits and striking out five in six innings.

Knoxville finished with a 34-4 record.

Bombers knock off Bondurant-Farrar in semifinals

Ballard reached the substate finals with a 6-2 semifinal victory at Bondurant-Farrar July 10 at Nite Hawk Field in Slater.

The Bombers were led by a great game from Peasley. Peasley was the winning pitcher after giving up one earned run on four hits and two walks with six strikeouts in six innings and he also went 2-for-2 with a home run and three RBIs at the plate.

Rouse doubled and scored, Nolan Schonhorst finished 2-for-3 with a run, Mudd went 1-for-3 with a run, Njos and Greco each scored once and Lande picked up a single.

Spartan, Bomber softball teams fall short in regional finals

The Collins-Maxwell and Ballard softball teams both came up short during regional final play last week.

Collins-Maxwell was dealt a 4-0 loss by No. 1 Martensdale St. Marys in the 1A Region 5 championship game July 10 at Martensdale. The Spartans ended their season with a 21-7 record.

Erica Houge threw a three-hitter and she gave up four unearned runs in seven innings as the losing pitcher for Collins-Maxwell. Houge struck out 10 batters, hit two and did not issue a single walk.

The Spartans only had two hits off MSM ace Campbell German. Cypress Erickson and Haylee Merryman both singled once and Emma Pasquariello and Jayden Peters each drew a walk.

The Ballard softball team suffered an 11-3 loss to No. 2 Carlisle in the 4A Region 4 championship game July 11 at Carlisle.

Brooklyn Baumgardner homered and drove in all three Ballard runs in the game. She was the losing pitcher, giving up 11 earned runs on 10 hits and eight walks with one strikeout.

Kayci Rigby singled twice, Jada Lande was 1-for-3 with a run and Sam Vetter walked twice and scored for Ballard. The Bombers ended their season with an 11-14 record.
