SWOCC men pick up two road wins

Jan. 23—The Southwestern Oregon Community College men's basketball team picked up a pair of road wins Friday and Saturday, offsetting a home loss to Umpqua earlier in the week.

The Riverhawks outscored the Lakers 82-77 at Prosper Hall.

O'shen Cazimero had 30 points to lead SWOCC and Logan Prince added 11, but it wasn't enough.

The game was tied at 73 with 90 seconds to go, but Umpqua got back-to-back layups by Coby Jiminez to take the lead and then kept it by hitting eight of nine free throws in the final 30 seconds.

Leo Sewell had 16 points and five Umpqua teammates also scored in double figures.

On Friday, the Lakers beat Chemeketa 80-64.

Logan Deal led the Lakers with 17 points while Prince and Zach Jefferson added 15 each and Colby Whicker scored 13.

And on Saturday, SWOCC beat Clackamas 91-83, building a 16-point halftime lead and staying in front.

Five Lakers scored in double figures in the win, led by Whicker with 20 points. Luke Fotheringham had 19, Cazimero 11 and Deal and Jefferson 10 each. Deal was a perfect 8-for-8 from the line and the Lakers shot 26-for-35 as a team. They also hit 11 of 22 3-pointers, led by Whicker with four.

Andre Lawrence led Clackamas with 16 points.

The Lakers are 4-2 in league play, trailing unbeaten Portland and Lane, which suffered its only loss to the Lakers. Umpqua and Chemeketa also have just two losses, but also only two wins as they work to make up games canceled because of last week's winter storm in the Willamette Valley.

The Lakers hosted Mount Hood in a make-up game Monday (results were not available) and also host Clark on Saturday. They are home for both games next week, too, against Lane on Wednesday and Portland on Saturday.

SWOCC's women continue to seek their first league win after losing all three games during the week.

Umpqua beat the Lakers 74-49 on Wednesday.

Jaci Powers had 13 points and Skylar Willey had 10 for the Lakers, who fell behind 21-12 after the first quarter and never caught up.

Brooklyn Fely had 24 points to lead the Riverhawks.

Chemeketa beat the Lakers 72-55, jumping out to a commanding 42-21 halftime edge.

Willey led the Lakers with 17 points while Powers and Shanya Gardner had nine each.

On Saturday, Clackamas had a similarly strong first half, leading 43-27 on the way to a 75-56 win over SWOCC.

Kylie Fletcher-Gilber had 12 points for the Lakers and Willey, Powers and Raegan Bruner had nine each.

Umpqua and Chemeketa are a perfect 4-0 and Clackamas is 2-1. Portland also is unbeaten at 2-0.
