SWOCC men beat Linn-Benton in hoops

Jan. 17—The Southwestern Oregon Community College men's basketball team used a strong second half to beat visiting Linn-Benton 71-65 on Wednesday, improving to 2-1 in NWAC South Region play.

The Lakers' scheduled Saturday trip to Chemeketa in Salem was postponed due to inclement weather in the Willamette Valley.

Linn-Benton led the Lakers 32-30 at the break, but SWOCC pulled ahead in the final 20 minutes, despite another cold night shooting from outside.

Logan Prince had 20 points and O'shen Cazimero and Merrick Sherwood added 15 each in the win.

Both Cazimero and Sherwood came up big at the free throw line in the win, combining to hit 15 of 17 free throws (Sherwood went 8-for-8).

The Lakers hit 27 of 35 free throws overall (77 percent) to offset shooting just 39 percent from the field and 10 percent (2-for-20) from 3-point range.

Cazimero and Luke Fotheringham each also had eight rebounds for SWOCC.

TJ Zimmerman had 25 points for the Roadrunners.

The result left Portland as the lone unbeaten team in the South Region at 2-0. The Lakers and Roadrunners, along with Chemeketa, Lane and Clackamas, all have one loss early in league play.

Even with the trip to Chemeketa postponed to Friday, the Lakers were still scheduled to host Mount Hood on Monday despite sustained cold temperatures in the valley (results were not available by press time).

The Lakers also are home for Umpqua on Wednesday and visit Clackamas on Saturday.

SWOCC's women fell to Linn-Benton 90-56 as the Roadrunners raced out to a 50-34 lead at halftime and added to it.

Jaci Powers had 15 points, Raegan Bruner 12, Jessi Knudsen 11 and Skylar Willey 10 for the Lakers in the loss. Bruner had all her points from 3-point range, converting four of seven attempts.

Linn-Benton shot a sizzling 69 percent from the floor, including 8 of 14 from 3-point range.

Brooklynn Walters and Hannah Berschauer, both non-starters, scored 15 points each to lead Linn-Benton.

SWOCC fell to 0-3 early in the league season. Linn-Benton is 1-1. Umpqua, Chemeketa and Portland all still have unbeaten league records.
