Suspects sought in shootout involving rifles near large group having fish fry in Erie park

Erie police detectives are hunting down surveillance video and witness information about a weekend shootout near an eastside park where a large group of people were having a fish fry.

No one was reported injured in the shooting, which damaged a stop sign and at least one vehicle.

Erie Police Chief Dan Spizarny on Tuesday called the Sunday night shooting "very concerning," as it involved at least four weapons, including two rifles.

"We were very fortunate," Spizarny said of the lack of reported injuries.

City police officers who were called to the area of McKinley Park on a report of shots fired Sunday night arrived to find about 30 people in the park, having a fish fry, Deputy Chief Rick Lorah said. The officers were directed to the area of East 23rd Street and Pennsylvania Avenue, where they found a large number of shell casings in the 2300 block of Pennsylvania Avenue, Lorah said.

Officers also located a stop sign that had two bullet holes in it, and they found some shattered glass indicating that at least one vehicle had been shot, according to Lorah.

No suspects in the shooting have been located as of Tuesday afternoon.

Investigators are following up on information received so far and are checking the area of the shooting for surveillance video from security cameras, Spizarny and Lorah said.
