BBC chief football writer Phil McNulty Q&A

Our chief football writer Phil McNulty takes weekly questions on issues from Premier League supporters.

Aaron: Have you been surprised by the incredible impact Unai Emery has had at Aston Villa?

Phil: I have Aaron, not because Emery is not a good coach – he is clearly outstanding – but I think even the most optimistic Villa fan would not have imagined them getting into Europe at the end of last season, then the manager guiding them to one point off the Champions League places this time around.

Emery has a proven track record of success, is incredibly smart tactically and has improved players who had started to struggle under Steven Gerrard, such as Ollie Watkins, Lucas Digne and Tyrone Mings (before his injury) to name but three. These are all the hallmarks of an elite coach.

He is doing a superb job and Villa are a very ambitious club. Great time to be an Aston Villa supporter.
