Super Bowl 2023: Eagles DC Jonathan Gannon says he will stay in Philadelphia

Emotions are high after a win like the Philadelphia Eagles earned in the NFC championship game on Sunday. It's hard to take anything at face value.

But Eagles defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon said he's staying in Philadelphia.

Fox 29 caught up to Gannon on the field after the Eagles beat the San Francisco 49ers and mentioned it might be his last game in Philadelphia. Gannon is a popular name among head coaching candidates this offseason.

Gannon shot down that idea, saying he wasn't going anywhere. That will be a topic of conversation during Super Bowl week.

“Nah, no, Philly is keeping me," Gannon told Fox 29. "Good, bad or indifferent, I’m staying here.”

Does that comment matter? Not really. It's not going to stop people from asking Gannon if he wants to interview for their spot, and Gannon will presumably consider those offers. You might not always have the opportunity to become an NFL head coach.

But perhaps he wants to stay. Dan Quinn did, remaining with the Dallas Cowboys as their defensive coordinator. Maybe Gannon will just become the latest candidate to tell the Denver Broncos he's not interested, and stick with the Eagles. Gannon just turned 40 and isn't running out of time to jump on any head-coaching offer that comes along, though nobody is ever guaranteed to remain a hot name.

Gannon has done a good job running the Eagles defense and has been in the head-coaching mix for two straight offseasons. The Eagles defense has been strong all season and was excellent against the 49ers, with their fierce pass rush knocking out two San Francisco quarterbacks.

There's no mystery why Gannon is a hot name in the coaching carousel. Now teams have to figure out if he is serious about staying in Philly.
