What is the Super Bowl 55?

It is the biggest game in American sport, one of the most-watched matches in the TV sporting calendar.

This year's event is the 55th time the game has been staged, so, in accordance with Roman numerical tradition, it will be known as Super Bowl LV.

The game will pit the winners of the AFC and NFC conferences against one another in a game of four quarters of 15 minutes which somehow conspires to take about four hours, including the much anticipated half-time show.

The winner will take home the Vince Lombardi trophy but also earn the right to douse their coach with a big bucket of luridly-coloured energy drink and have their excitable quarterback shout the phrase "I'm going to Disneyworld" into the microphone of an accommodating broadcast journalist:

When is it?

Super Bowl LV will take place on Sunday, February 7.

Which teams are playing?

The reigning champions, the Kansas City Chiefs, will take on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers who are led by Tom Brady.

The last time a team won back-to-back Super Bowls was the New England Patriots in 2004.

Where is it being held?

Tampa Bay, Florida has the honour. The Raymond James Stadium will host the game. Remarkably, it is the first time in NFL history that that a team in the Super Bowl will play in their home stadium.

It seats 65,000 fans and has hosted the Super Bowl on two other occasions, in 2000 and in 2008.

Will there be fans in attendance?

Yes. There will be 22,000 fans in the stadium. Among those, there will be 7,500 vaccinated health workers who have been given free tickets for the event as thank you for all their hard work during the pandemic.

Who is the half-time performer?

The Weeknd (correct spelling) will perform at half-time. Famous for the songs 'I can't feel my face', 'The Hills' and 'Blinding lights'.

Who is singing the national anthem?

Country star Eric Church and R&B singer Jazmine Sullivan will sing the national anthem. In addition, H.E.R. will perform “America the Beautiful.”

How to watch in the UK?

The Kansas City Chiefs, led by Patrick Mahomes, defeated the San Francisco 49ers 31-20 in an entertaining affair. The Chiefs got their hands on the Vince Lombardi Trophy for the second time in their history, having won back in 1969.
