Suns' Monty Williams wins monthly coach honor, worried about 'Shaqtin' a Fool' on technical

Western Conference coach of the month winner Monty Williams' mind wandered to random, but hilarious places after receiving a technical foul in the fourth quarter of Tuesday's win over Golden State.

The Suns coach walked onto the Footprint Center court thinking Warriors coach Steve Kerr had called a timeout after Jae Crowder's 3 put Phoenix up 97-91 with 3:47 left that had the sellout crowd of 17,071 roaring.

Kerr didn't.

"I was so excited Jae hit the shot, man, and then I saw it," a smiling Williams said after the game. "It felt like I was, you know, those National Geographic deals where one of the animals falls and all the stampede just run him over. I couldn't get out of the way fast enough."

Then Williams quickly visualized seeing this over and over again on the one place no NBA player of coach wants to wind up.

"I was just thinking 'Shaqtin' A Fool,'" a still smiling Williams said. "I'm going to be on one of those shows."

Williams wasn't on the latest episode that aired Tuesday after the Suns-Warriors showdown on TNT as the nominees were likely in the can.

Maybe Shaquille O'Neal and the NBA on TNT crew won't put Williams' brain freeze tech on the next episode.

If it does happen, at least Williams will have an award to go with it.

Receiving the honor for a third time in his coaching career Thursday, Williams also won it in January 2011 in New Orleans and last season with the Suns.

"It’s pretty clear when you win that type of award, or honor, it’s not even an award I don’t think, it’s a reflection of players playing well," Williams said after Thursday's win over Detroit. "A staff that works hard, and people in the organization that create an environment for us to be the best we can be, but it’s the players. When you get it, you’re grateful for it, and I certainly am, but it means you’re playing well, and that’s what I’m proud of, the way our guys have played."

This latest one comes after leading the Suns to a historic 16-0 record in November as part of an 18-game winning streak to set a franchise record for consecutive wins.

"That's huge, man," Suns backup point guard Cameron Payne said after Thursday's win. "That's huge. I feel like he was supposed to be coach of the year last year. Any milestone is a great milestone. He did something a lot of coaches have never done. Big ups to Mont. He's doing a hell of a job."

The Suns (19-3) look to extend the record in Friday's game at Golden State (18-3) at Chase Center in San Francisco.
