Suns’ Devin Booker: ‘I should never be compared to Kobe Bryant.’

The Phoenix Suns’ playoff run has been one of the best stories of the season, and star guard Devin Booker has played a colossal role in getting his team this far.

Booker, 24, has taken an incredible leap in his first-ever postseason, showing he can be the true No. 1 option for a winning team with Chris Paul as his running mate in the backcourt.

Booker has dropped multiple 40-point games in this postseason, including some games against the Los Angeles Lakers in the first round when he simply couldn’t miss from anywhere on the floor.

His ability to pick apart defenses regardless of the coverage, combined with his absurd shotmaking abilit, has been reminiscent of Kobe Bryant’s days in the playoffs.

However, on an appearance on ESPN’s “The Jump”, Booker explained he doesn’t want to be compared to Bryant:

“I haven’t really thought about it much. I know it’s something everybody has going on right now, you know, I didn’t make that comparison myself. And, you know, I just leave it at what he’s done for me as a mentor and the advice that he’s left me with. So I try to take bits and pieces of his mentality and his approach, but, you know, I should never be compared to Kobe Bryant.”

Given Booker’s age and the number of accomplishments throughout his relatively young career, comparing him to Bryant isn’t fair achievement-wise. But many see the aesthetic similarities between the two, which is usually why Booker is brought up in the same sentences as the NBA legend.

Game 6 between the Suns and Milwaukee Bucks is July 20 at 6 p.m. PST. The Suns trail the series, 3-2.
