The story behind the epic rubber duck troll at Ohio State

It was a nearly perfect weekend for Michigan football fans as not only did the Wolverines dominate Washington to the tune of 31-10, but Ohio State lost at home earlier in the day to Oregon.

In case you missed it, it was thought that someone on the Oregon side of things trolled Ohio State similar to how Baker Mayfield did by planting the Oklahoma flag at midfield after the Buckeyes’ last home loss, but it gets even better than that: the troll was actually an 11-year old Ducks fan.

Fox Sports’ Charlotte Wilder, who first found the rubber duck at midfield, caught up with 11-year old Dublin to hear the story of how his viral troll came to be.

And yes, it was meant to be a troll.

“Before the game, we went to a tailgate. As a little souvenir, you could say, they gave us little rubber ducks,” he said. “Then, at the very end of the game, players were giving us high-fives and I gave one of the ducks to them. Fast forward maybe 15 minutes or so, I just got the idea somehow of putting the rubber duck in the middle of the field — not knowing it was gonna go viral or anything, just as kind of like a troll!”

But it didn’t end there.

While planting the duck at midfield was one thing, Dublin took things a step further the next day, going back to the stadium and taking pictures of himself on the Buckeyes’ home field, really rubbing it in as best he could.

“The next day, we woke up, we got some food for breakfast and then we got some Lime scooters and rode around campus for a bit,” he said. “Then we went to the stadium, kinda went around it. We saw one of the gates just open and the day before the game, they didn’t let us in, and it was open. And now, they just didn’t care — there was somebody standing there. There wasn’t really anyone. So we just walked in, made it onto the field, made a funny video and checked to see if it was still there, and it was not.”
