Storm drops 9 inches of snow, more expected

Dec. 14—JAMESTOWN — A winter storm dropped 9 inches of snow Tuesday into Wednesday morning, Dec. 13-14, in Jamestown, and more is expected to come Thursday, Dec. 15, according to Alex Edwards, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Bismarck.

A winter storm warning was extended until 6 a.m. Friday, Dec. 16, for Foster, Kidder, LaMoure, Logan, Stutsman and Wells counties.

Edwards said the concern with the storm system is the increasing winds Thursday. He said the Jamestown area is expected to get winds gusting around 40 to 45 mph.

"This is especially going to cause problems in the Jamestown area where used snow and this period of falling snow will be blowing around and it will significantly reduce visibility throughout the day," he said.

He said another 1 to 2 inches was expected after noon on Wednesday with another 3 to 4 inches on Thursday night.

"It could definitely exceed a foot by the time this is all done," Edwards said.

He said the snow that fell Tuesday into Wednesday morning had decent moisture content. He said the North Dakota State Hospital reported 9 inches of snow with a moisture content of 0.6 inch.

"You add another 3 to 4 inches, you will probably see an inch of liquid out of that," he said. "That will be a good thing when that finally melts down, although a lot of that might just be runoff later this spring. That depends on how it melts and how quickly it melts."

At 9 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 14, the North Dakota Department of Transportation and the North Dakota Highway Patrol reopened Interstate 94 from Dickinson to Fargo after it was closed at 10 p.m. Tuesday.
