Stop if you've heard this one before: Marcus Mariota exits Titans game with injury
Marcus Mariota left the Tennessee Titans game on Sunday with an injury.
Yes, again.
Mariota had started to warm up the last couple weeks, but his latest injury is never too far off. Late in the second quarter against the Indianapolis Colts, Mariota got hit in the right elbow, seemingly aggravating an injury he had earlier this season. Blaine Gabbert came in and he started the second half too, while Mariota was on the sideline.
Mariota has had some good moments in his career, but the biggest question about him has been his durability. His first two seasons ended with leg injuries. He had a hamstring injury that affected him last season. This year he pinched a nerve in his elbow in Week 1.
Just when it seemed he was getting healthy, with good outings against the Cowboys and Patriots in wins, he got hurt again.
It’s an issue the Titans will have to wrestle with as they consider Mariota’s future. The second pick of thee draft in 2015, Mariota will enter the final year of his rookie contract next season. He has been OK. It’s not a slam-dunk decision to give him a massive extension. But teams very rarely give up on a quarterback of Mariota’s age, draft pedigree and past performance.
But if Mariota can’t stay healthy, it certainly makes it a risky decision to pay him.
