Stone holds off CCHS, win district title

Jan. 22—The Stone Memorial High School Panthers used a strong start to pick up a hard-fought 48-36 wrestling victory over crosstown rival Cumberland County Jan. 12 at CCHS. The win secured the district championship for the Panthers.

"It has been a big week for us," said Stone Memorial coach Brian Parker. "We beat Livingston and Upperman on Tuesday, and so did Cumberland County. Then, we beat York and CCHS to win the district title.

"All the matches were close. Brice Martin's big pin against CCHS put us in a position to win, and Matt Becker's win sealed the district title for us."

Cumberland County drew first blood against Stone Memorial when Deacon Shockley won a forfeit victory at 106 pounds.

Stone came back to win the next three matches. Jack Nealey took a forfeit victory at 113 pounds and Bradeck Cole took the victory at 120 pounds when he beat Nathan Lawson. SMHS' Dalton Platz was able to take down Anthony Godsey at 126 pounds.

The Panthers and the Jets split the next four matches. Cumberland County's Jacob Voss downed Avery Scoville at 132 pounds, but Stone's Chanler Gavin beat Jack Monchecourt in the 138-pound division.

Brice Martin, wrestling at 144 pounds for Stone, defeated Wyatt Sharpe. Bryson Young beat Stone's Jonathan Aguirre at 150 pounds.

Trenton Duncan and Aden Thompson followed that match with consecutive victories for Stone Memorial. Duncan knocked off Matthew Patton and Thompson took down James Lawson.

Cumberland County's Benjamin Hulburt, wrestling at 175 pounds, beat Stone's Daniel Hawn. James Gilstrap followed that with another CCHS victory with a win over Jonah Reuer.

The last two matches of the night were also split between the two teams. Stone's Matthew Becker beat James Johnson at 215 pounds, and Cumberland County's Jacob Nealen took down James Becker at 285 pounds.

"The team is still improving every time they step on the mat," said Cumberland County coach Brad Eich. "That is a result of all the hard work they have put in during practices."

Stone Memorial and Cumberland County are now preparing for the Boys Region Dual Tournament. The date is tentatively set for Jan. 25 at SMHS. The first match is set for 5:30 p.m.
