Stewartville beats No. 4 Orono in overtime to earn spot in Class 3A state consolation finals

Mar. 21—ST. PAUL — The Stewartville boys basketball team got a measure of revenge on Thursday in consolation play in the Class 3A boys basketball state tournament.

The Tigers defeated No. 4 seed Orono 72-69 in overtime in the consolation semifinals at Concordia University to advance to the fifth-place game on Friday.

Stewartville coach Parker Lyga was upset that the Tigers were not among the top five seeds in the Class 3A field despite entering state play 26-3, ranked No. 4 in the state in Class 3A and owning the No. 5 QRF in the class.

Unseeded Stewartville faced No. 1 Totino-Grace in the state quarterfinals and suffered a 57-48 loss. Orono was one of two seeded teams in Class 3A with a lower QRF than Stewartville. The other was No. 5 seed DeLaSalle, which defeated Orono in the quarterfinal round on Wednesday.

Orono trailed by as many as 10 points in the second half before taking a late 62-59 lead in the game. Stewartville forced overtime when junior Parker Wangen nailed a clutch 3-point shot with just three seconds left in regulation. The Tigers then pulled out the narrow win in OT.

Stewartville senior Henry Tschetter snapped a 69-69 tie with a bucket with 28 seconds left in the extra session. He added one free throw with five seconds remaining for the final point of the game.

Tschetter paced the Tigers with 21 points as he shot 6-for-13 from the field and 9-for-14 at the line. He added five rebounds and six assists.

Wangen had 18 points, six assists and for rebounds for Stewartville. All of his points came from 3-point range as he was 6-for-11 from beyond the arc. Senior Jason Shindelar had 10 points, seven rebounds and four assists while junior Caleb Bancroft had nine points and seven rebounds.

Nolan Groves had 22 points, eight rebounds and six assists for Orono, which finishes the season 19-11.

Orono led by as many as seven points in the first half.

Stewartville (27-4) will play Minneapolis South (23-7) in the fifth-place game at 4 p.m. on Friday at Concordia University. The Tigers won the conslation title to take fifth in the state a year ago.
