Steven Gerrard secured victory over Nicky Butt as the ex-Liverpool and Manchester United midfielders were pitched against each other in Europe.

The duo led their club’s respective Under 19 sides in the last 16 of the Uefa Youth Cup, Liverpool heading into the quarter-final courtesy of a 2-0 win at Prenton Park.

Welsh international Ben Woodburn, the most experienced player on show, struck the opening goal on 10 minutes, heading in a cross from Neco Williams. Rafa Camacho sealed the win with 12 minutes left.

Liverpool dominated the early stages, Woodburn, Curtis Jones and winger Bobby Adekanye especially prominent.

United improved towards the end of the first half, and almost equalised on 39 minutes when Tahith Chong hit the bar. Josh Bohui also went close, although Gerrard’s side was also cursing the woodwork after Elijah Dixon-Bonner’s shot from distance.

United pushed on in the second half, but Liverpool doubled their lead thanks to a spectacular strike from substitute Camacho on 78 minutes.

Gerrard’s side will face Manchester City in the quarter-final.

Earlier today, Spurs progressed after beating Monaco on penalties after a 1-1 draw, England's youngster making as strong an impression in Europe this season as the senior clubs.
