Stetson rushes past Morehead State with a big second-quarter swing

The Stetson Hatters needed less than three minutes to flip their game against Morehead State Saturday.

Down 13-7 in the middle of the second quarter, they rattled off three touchdowns in two minutes and 54 seconds of game time to take a 28-13 lead.

Stetson maintained control the rest of the way and won 38-26 at Spec Martin Memorial Stadium. It was the program's first Pioneer Football League contest of the season.

Safety Ja’Veon Ensley sparked the run with a 32-yard pick-six. Quarterback Brady Meitz got the memo, taking care of the next two scores. He hit receiver Nazeviah Burris for a 53-yard end-zone trip before rushing in for a 1-yard touchdown of his own.

The Hatters surrendered a Morehead State touchdown before halftime, cutting their advantage to 28-20. But they outscored the Eagles 10-6 in the second half.

On offense, Meitz finished with 264 passing yards and those two touchdowns. Junior running back Jalen Leary ran for 82 yards and two scores. He passed Cole Mazza to become the program's all-time leading rusher with 1,987 career yards.

On defense, Stetson allowed just 199 yards of total offense. Ensley, with two picks, a blocked punt and eight tackles, was the star.

The Hatters (3-1, 1-0) hit the road for the first time this season next weekend. They play San Diego at 4 p.m. Saturday.
