The third preseason game of the year is always the most important for the Pittsburgh Steelers. This isn’t only the game where Pittsburgh plays the bulk of its starters but since they only play a series or two, it’s a great game to get a look at the Steelers backups against the opposing team’s starter. Here are the four position battles we are most interested in and will be watching on Saturday night against the Detroit Lions.

Left tackle

Karl Roser / Pittsburgh Steelers

OK, so technically there isn't a position battle at left tackle but maybe there should be. Starter Chuks Okorafor has been good but not great and has shown some lapses in consistency. Meanwhile, rookie Dan Moore Jr. seems improving every week.

Inside linebacker

Karl Roser / Pittsburgh Steelers

With new inside linebacker Joe Schobert already working with the starters, the group of backups including Robert Spillane, Marcus Allen, Ulysees Gilbert III and Buddy Johnson Jr. are fighting it out behind him and Devin Bush.

Nickel cornerback

Karl Roser / Pittsburgh Steelers

Is there such a thing as nickelback by committee? That is what it feels like the Steelers are going to have this season. Cameron Sutton, James Pierre, Antoine Brooks and Arthur Maulet are all getting reps on the inside and I'm not sure which one will end up with the job.

Center

Karl Roser / Pittsburgh Steelers

This job was supposed to belong to rookie Kendrick Green he still hasn't found a way to fully overtake J.C. Hassenauer. This game will be huge for Green to show he can play with better functional strength.
