Steelers add former Jets safety Arthur Maulet on 1-year contract
May 7—In a move designed to add veteran depth to the position room, the Pittsburgh Steelers signed safety Arthur Maulet to a one-year contract Friday afternoon.
Maulet, 27, spent the past two seasons with the New York Jets. He started 11 games and appeared in 23 over those two seasons.
The Steelers also waived safety John Battle and cornerback Trevor Williams, giving them 90 players on the roster.
Last season, when he made five starts because of injuries at the position, Maulet had 23 tackles, one sack and one interception. He also contributed on special teams during his two years in New York.
Maulet attended Memphis and was signed as an undrafted free agent by the New Orleans Saints in 2017. He appeared in six games for the Saints that season and was with the Saints and Indianapolis Colts in 2018.
Maulet gives the Steelers veteran experience behind starters Minkah Fitzpatrick and Terrell Edmunds. The only other returning safety on the roster is 2020 sixth-round draft pick Antoine Brooks Jr.
The Steelers drafted Oklahoma cornerback/safety Tre Norwood in the seventh round this year, and they signed Florida's Donovan Stiner and Penn State's Lamont Wade (Clairton) as undrafted free agents.
Jordan Dangerfield, a safety and special teams captain last year, remains a free agent.
