Iowa State became the first program to offer a Class of 2018 defensive lineman last year and hopes to finally be on the verge of learning if it will be adding him to the program starting next fall after hosting the recruit for an unofficial visit.

Chicago (Ill.) Marist defensive lineman Gavin McCabe has been linked with the Cyclones for several months, camping in Ames last summer and taking a game-day visit for the Oklahoma game. Now the three-star prospect that’s ranked 18th overall in the state of Illinois and 56th nationally at the defensive tackle position appears to be ready to make a decision.

Since securing an ISU offer, McCabe has gone on to claim Power-5 offers from the likes of Arkansas, Boston College, Georgia Tech, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Purdue, Rutgers, Syracuse, Texas Tech, Washington State and West Virginia.

During his most recent stop in Ames, McCabe said he enjoyed his time with defensive line coach Eli Rasheed and got to meet a pair of Iowa State commits Re-Al Mitchell and Sterling Galban.

For more on McCabe's recruitment and how the Cyclones stack up at this stage of the process, check out a more-detailed story on the ISU Confidential message board.
