ALL-STATE BASKETBALL (GIRLS): Aby named Class 4A Coach of the Year

Mar. 16—Good Hope's Justin Aby earned Class 4A Coach of the Year honors when the Alabama Sports Writers Association (ASWA) released this year's All-State basketball teams on Saturday.

In his fifth season at the helm, Aby led the top-ranked Raiders to a 33-2 record and the program's first-ever state championship.

The Raiders, who ended the season on a 19-game winning streak, tallied 17 victories versus ranked opponents — six of which advanced to their respective Final Fours — by an average margin of 20 points.

Additionally, Good Hope won its last four matchups — No. 3 Deshler, No. 6 Priceville, No. 2 Prattville Christian and T.R. Miller — by a combined 99 points and is 94-10 in its past three seasons under Aby.

For Ivey Maddox, it was hard to pinpoint which one of her coach's attributes stood out most.

"He trusted us — on and off the court," the senior said. "A lot of people say that your coach shouldn't be your friend, but coach Aby was a friend to us. He truly wanted the best for us and went above and beyond for every little thing. No matter how many times we made fun of his outfits or his hair, this past season was the most special with it being the last one.

"There were a lot of emotional roller coasters, but he always reminded us who we were."
