Stars of the Day: Durfee boys hoop wins seventh straight game; Westport knocks off Avon

SOMERSET — The win streak continues for the Durfee boys basketball team.

The Hilltoppers won their seventh straight game on Friday, beating non-league opponent Somerset Berkley on the road, 75-51, at Somerset Berkley Regional High School.

"It's great to see this group embrace team basketball and everyone being able to understand their role on the team," Hilltoppers head coach Joe DaCruz said.

Senior Jevon Holley finished with a team-high 21 points for Durfee (9-1).

Jeyden Espinal finished with 17 points and Devontae Stewart added 16 points. Jaden Lewis ended with nine points in the victory.

Lewis, Stewart, Jaleale Simmons and Alexis Montilla (seven blocks) played great defensively.

Ethan Dias had a game-high 23 points and 12 rebounds for SB (7-5; 6-2 in South Coast Conference), who saw their five-game win streak come to an end.

Mason Medeiros added nine points.

The Hilltoppers host New Bedford next Friday while the Raiders host Warehamon Monday.

Westport 75, Avon 43

The Wildcats ran away with their contest against Avon.

Ben Boudria scored a career-high 23 points for Westport (11-1). He also shot from 4-of-7 from beyond the arc, had five steals and three assists.

Hunter Brodeur and Owen Boudria each finished with nine points in the win.

Bishop Connolly 65, Diman 51

The Cougars defeated neighboring Diman in a league game.

Alex Krynicki led Connolly (4-3; 2-1 in Mayflower Athletic Conference) with a game-high 22 points. Teammate Mason Humphrey finished 19 points and Jayden Souza added 10 points.

Jacob Furtado led the Bengals (3-9) with a team-high 18 points. Bobby Soares chipped in with 13 points.

The Cougars host Westport on Wednesday.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Durfee 56, Somerset Berkley 45

The Lady Hilltoppers get back in the win column after beating non-league opponent Somerset Berkley.

Mackenzie Carreiro led Durfee (7-4) with a game-high 25 points.

Mya Hayes-Paulette finished with 18 points and Julia Hargraves added eight points.

Gabriella Nugent led SB (5-7) with 15 points. Allie Powers finished with 11 points.

Bishop Connolly 49, Southeastern 34

The Lady Cougars won a Mayflower Athletic Conference contest with Southeastern.

Abby Sousa led Connolly (4-3) with 13 points and four rebounds.

Maggie Pabst finished with 12 points and nine rebounds. Hannah Anselmo contributed 10 assists, six rebounds, and seven steals.

Westport 49, Avon 19

The Lady Wildcats easily defeated Avon at home.

Lily Pichette led Westport (6-6) with a game-high 21 points. She also grabbed 12 rebounds, had four steals and two assists. Leah Sylvain chipped in with 12 points, six steals, an assist and a rebound.

Other contributors include Lacey Chaunt (six points, seven rebounds, three assists and two steals) and Abbey Silvia (six points, seven rebounds, two assists and three steals).

HOCKEY

Bishop Stang 5, Foxboro 2

The Spartans unbeaten streak continues at 21 games after beating non-league opponent Foxboro in the finals of a makeup Dartmouth holiday tournament.

Quinn Pine led Stang (10-0-1) with a pair of goals. Justin Gouveia and Adyn Simmons each contributed a goal and an assist. Seamus Marshall also scored a goal in the win.

Nate Moniz and Jack Jedrey each had assists.

Foxboro outshot the Spartans 35-18. Stang now has a record of 19-0-2 dating back to last year.
