Star Wars: The Last Jedi trailer: Rey's 'raw' power terrifies Luke

A new trailer for Star Wars: The Last Jedi has been released, offering a fresh glimpse at the next instalment in the epic series.

The forthcoming film, out in UK cinemas from December 14, picks up directly after the cliffhanger ending of 2015's box office smash Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens.

An elderly Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), the "Last Jedi" of the title, was glimpsed only in the final scene of that film but reappears here alongside the series' new star Daisy Ridley as Rey.

The trailer debuted in dramatic fashion during Monday Night Football halftime.

Storm troopers marched onto Chicago's Soldier Field and pyrotechnics fired as the preview played onscreen.

The clip featured all the latest characters from the Star Wars universe. Rey is practising her light saber skills and questioning her destiny, and it appears Adam Driver's Kylo Ren is prepared to lend her a hand.

Chewbacca also appears in the trailer - along with a new bird-like creature known as a Porg.

The new film also sees the return of John Boyega as Stormtrooper-turned-rebel Finn, Oscar Isaac as fighter pilot Poe Dameron and Adam Driver as the malevolent Kylo Ren.

The late Carrie Fisher, who recorded her final scenes as Princess Leia in one of her last performances before her death last year, stars again as Princess - now General - Leia.

Directed by Rian Johnson, the film introduces several new characters to the Star Wars universe, including a pair of Resistance fighters played by Kelly Marie Tran and Laura Dern, as well as an as-yet-unnamed villain played by Benicio Del Toro.
