When the time comes in late August for St. Michael’s to face crosstown rival Santa Fe High in the 2017 season opener, Horsemen head coach Joey Fernandez will look across the field and see a familiar face.

Former long-time St. Michael’s defensive coordinator Andrew Martinez was named head coach of the struggling Demons in January, setting up an interesting dynamic when the two friends meet.

“It’s going to be interesting because it’s going to be his (Martinez’s) first game and he’s going to be excited,” Fernandez told “He has been around me for a long time and he understands what I do offensively. He knows he has a lot to get ready for. He has his work cut out for him as far as preparations for that first game. It will be an interesting chess match between me and him.”
