QUEENS, N.Y. (June 22, 2017) – A meeting of local foes will highlight the Madison Square Garden Holiday Festival on Sunday, Dec. 17, as St. John’s will face off against Iona inside “The World’s Most Famous Arena.”
The meeting will mark just the 10th contest all-time between the two schools located less than 20 miles away from one another and the first since 1995. The Red Storm owns a 6-3 advantage in those previous meetings, the first of which came in December of 1946, a 71-49 victory for the Johnnies.
One of the most historic regular season tournaments in all of college basketball, the Holiday Festival will feature St. John’s in its ranks for the 51st time overall and the 15th-straight season dating back to 2002. Since 2010, the Red Storm has won six of its last seven games in the Holiday Festival. The Johnnies own a 73-39 record all-time in the Holiday Festival.
The two-time defending MAAC Champions and winners of three of the last five conference titles, Iona is coming off a 22-13 campaign that ended with a loss to eventual national finalist Oregon in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament.
