Spurs F Trey Lyles to miss Disney World reboot with appendicitis

An NBA player will miss the league’s Disney World reboot due to an illness other than the coronavirus.

San Antonio Spurs forward Trey Lyles is out for the season with appendicitis, Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich told reporters on Wednesday. From Jeff Garcia of Spurs Zone:

“We just lost Trey to an appendicitis today,” Popovich told reporters during a video conference. “We’re down a little bit.”

“He’s done. He’s out.”

In his first season with the Spurs, Lyles was averaging 6.4 points and 5.7 rebounds in 20.2 minutes per game, working as the Spurs’ starting power forward.

The 27-36 Spurs were already without LaMarcus Aldridge due to shoulder surgery. Missing two starting big men won’t be helpful as the team attempts to close a four-game gap from the eighth-place Memphis Grizzlies, with three other teams — the Portland Trail Blazers, New Orleans Pelicans and Sacramento Kings — between them.

Without Lyles and Aldridge, Garcia reports that Spurs will turn to a big man rotation of Jakob Poeltl, Luka Samanic, Tyler Zeller, and Chimezie Metu.
