Spring roundup: Red Sox LHP Sale sharp in spring debut

Boston left-hander Chris Sale struck out five in four innings in his spring debut, but the Miami Marlins rallied for a 5-4 victory over the Red Sox on Friday in Jupiter, Fla.

Sale allowed one run and two hits during his 58-pitch stint. He blanked the Marlins through the first three innings before Derek Dietrich doubled to lead off the fourth and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Justin Bour.

Miami scored four runs in the sixth on Bour's run-scoring double, Tomas Telis' RBI single and the go-ahead two-run homer by J.B. Shuck.

Miguel Sano slammed two solo homers to lead Minnesota past Tampa Bay at Port Charlotte, Fla. C.J. Cron had a run-scoring double for the Rays, who also received RBI singles from Denard Span and Micah Johnson.

Kendrys Morales and Devon Travis homered to help Toronto defeat Baltimore at Dunedin, Fla. Engelb Vielma delivered a two-run triple for Baltimore.

Cubs 6, Angels 1

Left-hander Jon Lester gave up three hits in five shutout innings as Chicago cruised past Los Angeles at Mesa, Ariz. Luis Valbuena hit a sacrifice fly for the Angels' lone run.

Athletics 2, Brewers 0

Khris Davis smacked a two-run homer in the first inning and it held up as Oakland blanked Milwaukee at Phoenix. The Brewers had just four hits and only got three runners in scoring position against five Athletics' hurlers.

Diamondbacks 7, Royals (ss) 2

Left-hander Robbie Ray struck out six in 3 1/3 innings and gave up one run and two hits to help Arizona defeat Kansas City at Surprise, Ariz. Paulo Orlando homered for the Royals.

Dodgers 6, Royals (ss) 4

Kyle Farmer hit a two-run homer and Edwin Rios added a two-run single as Los Angeles defeated Kansas City at Glendale, Ariz. Whit Merrifield, Drew Butera and Anderson Miller each homered for the Royals.

Giants 10, Mariners 7

Pablo Sandoval went 3-for-3 with two RBIs and Brandon Belt was among four San Francisco players to hit homers as the Giants outlasted the Mariners at Scottsdale, Ariz. Dee Gordon hit two homers and Nelson Cruz and Dan Vogelbach also went deep for Seattle.

Padres 2, White Sox 0

Cory Spangenberg went 3-for-3 with a homer and Matt Szczur also went deep as San Diego blanked Chicago at Peoria, Ariz. White Sox right-hander Carson Fulmer gave up both homers while dropping to 0-3 this spring.

Indians 8, Rockies 5

Francisco Mejia hit a three-run blast and Yan Gomes had a homer and three RBIs as Cleveland knocked off Colorado at Scottsdale, Ariz. David Dahl homered and had three RBIs for the Rockies.

Pirates 5, Phillies 4

Jordan Luplow homered and had three RBIs and Elias Diaz also went deep as Pittsburgh edged Philadelphia at Clearwater, Fla. Rhys Hoskins went 2-for-2 with a walk and two RBIs for the Phillies.

Mets 4, Tigers 4

JaCoby Jones hit a three-run homer and Dixon Machado added a solo blast as Detroit and New York played to a nine-inning tie at Lakeland, Fla. Kevin Plawecki and Wilmer Flores homered for the Mets.
